Promise Rings: Good Idea Or Not?

Sometimes couples in serious relationships aren't ready to take a step ahead end get engage. That doesn't have to mean necessarily that they don't love each other, nor that they aren't faithful. Those are the situations where promise rings could be the best idea to show commitment to each other, without engagement.

Michael Gilger, popular owner and also designer at Gilger Designs, points out that promise rings are the very beginning of a serious relationship and that they symbolize promise of being faithful and sincere proof of love for your significant other.

He isn't the only one who thinks that, and Justine Marshek who is also designer, but at Ames Silversmithing said, that if you want to promise that you will love your soul mate forever, promise ring is a way to do that. It also represents your desire to continue your lives together someday.

Not everyone thinks that it is a good idea, so for example, Jackie Gleason, thinks that promise rings don't have a point. She is junior elementary educator and she thinks that promise rings are just a way of increasing sales in jewelry industry. If you want to express your deep love and commitment, you should just buy engagement ring, instead of buying them both. There is also a point of view that there is no need for physical evidence of love and commitment. In serious and honest relationships you should expect that kind of love, respect and commitment without the ring itself. Jackie is so sure in her believes and principles, so she forbid her boyfriend to ever buy her promise ring, which he was fine with, especially because he doesn't have to spend even more money.

Traditional promise ring is a single, small diamond on gold or even a combination of white/gold band. Like an engagement ring, promise ring is also meant to be worn on the ring finger of the left hand, said Marshek.

Today, promise ring could have more than just one diamond, or even some colored precious stones.

Gilger thinks that one small stone can insult a woman's intelligence, and he sells rings with smaller bands but with multiple stones.

Apparently promise rings aren't that popular at all. According to Gilger, his store never made a custom promise ring nor sell one, even though part of his business is to make custom rings related to customer requests.

Marshek said that it is the same at Ames Silversmitting and that when he was in school, which was 12 years ago, having a promise ring was something natural and much more popular. People are buying custom rings, but they aren't necessarily promise rings. In addition to that, Jackie said that she would wore a colored ring on her right hand or some other jewelry like bracelet, necklace or earrings rather than a promise ring.

Price of a promise ring depends on the size and the stone and Marshek said that you could spend from $295 to $1000, but it's all relative and totally up to you.
